TRAINING SEQUENCE
The 7 Steps to getting your licence:
Your best first step is to take a Trial Introductory Flight (the “TIF”).
A TIF is not compulsory but we highly recommend it.
This allows you to soak in the freedom of flight and get a real feeling for the ultimate experience.
You’ll know by the end of this flight whether you want to continue (it’s so much fun almost everybody does).
Your TIF is the first official lesson you will enter it in your logbook.
Get your Student Pilot Certificate.
There’s a bit of paperwork to do; not much and not much delay.
Start learning.
You can start your lessons virtually straight away. There’s some theory to learn. You can do that at the same time as you’re learning to fly.
We can also help you with the theory if you need some coaching.
Reach the required standard.
- Regulations require a minimum of 20 hrs of instruction before the issue of your Pilot Certificate.
(That’s less than the minimum hours required to get an ordinary pilot licence.) - Of those 20 hours five must be solo.
- If you already have a General Aviation Licence or have done some GA training those hours may count towards your licence and significantly reduce the hours and the cost as long as you can demonstrate your ability at the required level.
- The cost of lessons is $220 per hour.
(That’s lots less than the hourly rate for training for an ordinary pilot licence.) - It takes a lot less than learning to fly an ordinary aeroplane and It takes less than half the time to get your wings and have the ultimate freedom to go where you want to go.
Do a theory test and a flight test (and pass them)
Receive your Pilot Certificate!
DO MORE FLYING!
You need additional qualifications and/or experience if you want to:
- use a radio
- carry passengers
- and travel more than 25 Nautical Miles from your take-off point (which is why you started, right?).
The great thing is that it’s all about flying
so you’ll love it all!
ADDITIONAL TRAINING
Pilot
Maintenance
Private Pilot Licence holders are permitted to perform some limited maintenance on their aircraft including for example changing or replenishing oil, changing tyres, replacing seats, replacing side windows, replacing batteries.
If you have a PPL we have the gear and the hangar, and we can teach you how.
Advanced
Theory
This is aviation. There’s lots of theory. We can help you with any theory related to your flying with us, especially Cross Country navigation. After all that’s the main reason we fly, to get out and see the world. But lots of people need a hand with other theory too. We can give you a hand with formal coaching.
Recency
Checks
Once you have your certificate or your licence you need to keep it fresh. Not only the regulators but other pilots need to be sure you’re not rusty. So everyone does a Biennial Flight Review. Often it’s all good and sometimes there’s a bit of work needed, if it’s been a while. We can get you back into business.
